Be as relaxed as you can. Nerves do help you to be alert, accept them and use them to your advantage. Drive to the standards required and you are sure to pass.
Preparation for your arrival
Have a good night's sleep. Recall where you have driven and think about the driving skills needed to safely succeed in the journey. You have been highly trained. Apply your new skills positively. Make sure you are not hungery, thirsty or in need of the toilet. A few good deep breaths will oxygenate your blood and help's you think clearer.
Documents Needed
You will need:
- Both parts of your photocard licence.
- If your licence is the paper type you will need photo ID. The necessary ID is listed on the back of your appointment letter.
- Your theory pass certificate.
- Your appointment letter.
Arriving at the test centre
You will have a driving session just before your test. I will make sure you arrive with time enough to park and relax in the Test Centre’s waiting room until the examiner arrives.
The examiner will ask you to sign a declaration saying you car is insured for you to drive during the test. Your documents are then checked before you go outside for your eyesight test. You must not forget your glasses or contact lenses if you need them for driving.
You will then get comfortable in your car as the examiner ensures your car has ‘L’ plates and road tax before your test begins.
Your test will be about 40 minutes long and you will go on many types of roads being both quiet and busy including some on dual carriageways. During your test time will be taken to stop and start properly and carry out at least two manoeuvres. The examiner will choose from:
- Reverse parking
- Reversing around a corner
- Turning in the road
- Parallel parking
- Emergency stop (one in three tests include this stop)
Before you drive away you will be asked two questions one ‘show me’ and one ‘tell me’. Answer one or both wrong and you will have recorded one fault in your Driving Test Report for a Safety problem. You will be well prepared and know all the information necessary to answer any two questions you are given.

You can get up to 15 minor driving mistakes and still pass your test. However one serious or dangerous mistake will result in failure. Minor errors are mistakes that do not inconvenience or put other road users into danger. Serious errors either put you or other road users into danger. |

Your test result
You will be given your result at the end of the test along with a verbal explanation of the primary faults collected on your test. Passing means you have shown a basic drive skill level which needs to improve with experience and time driving. The Pass Plus course will help you gain much needed experience quickly and safely, check this out on the Pass plus course section.
